Invariably for centuries, the streets of Thai towns and cities have been traversed by barefoot men, and also quite young boys, wearing bright orange robes. Who are those mysterious, spiritual men, both venerable and young, collecting alms into their metal bowls and attracting friendly gestures, radiant smiles and the respectful glances of passer-bys?

Monks are an inherent part of the Buddhist religion. The men living in the monastic complexes plumb the mysteries of Buddha’s teachings, meditate and work on improving their karma (the sum of good deeds predetermining your future incarnation). Sending their son to a monastery is a great event and honour for every Thai family. Thai men can deepen their knowledge of Buddhism for a few months or stay in the monastery for their whole life and teach the next generations of monks.

Donning a monk’s robe, at least for a short period of one’s life, is part of tradition, therefore every boy – more less between finishing school and starting a regular job – strives to follow this custom.

What is the life of a monk like?

Monastery dwellers are obliged live a very modest and disciplined life. The universal custom is to receive alms from the faithful followers of Buddhism, who consider helping the monks as one of the ways to achieve nirvana. Men living in monasteries spend their time meditating and studying the scriptures. Many people seek their help concerning the faith, as they are most versed in the teachings of the Enlightened One.
