The art of creating fish mobiles is well known to rural Thais. This handicraft is particularly popular in the Central Plain, where even children occupy themselves with tying coconut and banana leaves into elaborate plaits.

The favourite species of fish copied in making these little masterpieces is carp – possibly because of its rhombus-like shape, which is perfect for creating an interesting composition.

The fish are sold either separately or in “shoals”. Particularly charming are the compositions depicting a mother fish surrounded by her little children. This kind of decoration is called “Pla Tapian Bai Lan”.

Hanging on fine threads, the colourful palm fish are moved by even the faintest breath of wind and in the past used to be hung over cribs to help lull babies to sleep.

Palm fish are also hung at the door as a talisman bringing happiness and good luck.

These days, palm-fish mobiles are mainly a decoration and an original souvenir. They are handicrafts characteristic of the Ayutthaya region, covered by the OTOP scheme.
