Looking from above at the canals of Thai cities you will notice spindle-shaped boats piled with all kinds of delicious goodies - colourful fruit, fragrant spices and steaming freshly-prepared titbits…

Thailand | Damnoen Saduk – Colourful floating markets are an extremely picturesque sight (by bradnwhs )

In the past, canals were the basis of Bangkok’s transport system, which created the reputation of Thailand’s capital as the “Venice of the East”. Today they mainly play the role of an unusual tourist attraction and, at the same time, the location of a thriving and profitable trade.

Trading on water is conducted in traditional style - the traders, usually wearing characteristic straw hats, sail up to the interested customers in their long boats filled with goods. All this looks very beautiful and extremely colourful.

It’s worth knowing that the floating markets of Thailand are, to some extent, a revival of an ancient tradition, much influenced by tourist agencies which want to provide attractions for their guests. The original traditional floating market is preserved in Damnoen Saduk – a town about 110 km west of Bangkok.
